The present investigation aims to describe the surgical management of cysts in the jaws. We developed: concept of cyst, etiology, classification of cysts in the jaw, diagnosis and surgical treatment. The methodology used includes the review of the scientific literature. As a result of this review, we can make an accurate diagnosis to identify the different cysts with jaw seats, complementary tests and the corresponding surgical treatment. Specifically we establish ontogenic, non-ontogenic cysts and inflammatory cysts. Diagnosis is considered as imaging technique, puncture, vitality tests and biopsy. Surgical treatment involves enucleation, marsupialization, recession and adjuvant treatments. We remarked the clinical relevance of maxillary cysts with keratinization are coupled to immunohistochemical techniques. Conclusions: At the moment when an injury is diagnosed as compatible with cyst, either clinically or radiographically, a differential and presumptive diagnosis should be established. Clinical, radiographic, as well as epidemiological, features are the main tools available to make a presumptive diagnosis. Immunohistochemical techniques are decisive for the identification of lesions. The orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst is an entity not described in the literature; however, we should consider it as a differential diagnosis of lesions such as the dentigerous cyst and odontogenic keratinizing tumor, since the clinical and, above all, radiological characteristics are very similar. The histopathological diagnosis is mandatory before performing any procedure to avoid overtraining this lesion, thus improving the prognosis and recovery of patients. The globulomaxillary cysts are categorized as epithelial cysts of non-odontogenic origin. However, Christha indicated an odontogenic origin and Little has proposed a dual origin: odontogenic and non odontogenic. The advantage of applying marsupialization as a treatment of the dentigerous cyst in pediatric patients is that this procedure is not invasive, reduces the risk of damage to adjacent anatomical structures.es_PE
